Charlotte is a Cornish artist and designer who has recently studied a BA (Hons) degree at Plymouth College of Art. A small home workshop enables Charlotte to create glass, textile and metal pieces hand crafted through a combination of traditional and contemporary processes.

Ecology, consumption and pollution are key themes of Charlotte’s work alongside the study of the human body. Microscopic cells and anatomical structures influence the design and concepts of Charlotte's work which stems from her Complementary Therapy background as a holistic therapist, with training in Aromatherapy, Reflexology and the Indian health system of Ayurveda. 

 

When a hot glass workshop is accessible, blown glass is the main vehicle to communicate concepts, where the individual pieces are handmade through the traditional technique of shaping molten glass in the hot shop. Once the glass has been annealed and cooled, the pieces are engraved, etched or painted to create surface decoration and imagery which has been informed by research and drawings. Use of digital software is applied in contemporary methods to create repeat patterns which have then been applied to the glass. 

Crochet, textiles and metal appear in her glass work usually as a means of displaying or supporting the forms. 

 

From her home studio, Charlotte makes contemporary jewellery using recycled precious metal which has led to an interest in stone setting. Her relationship with glass extends to the home studio in the form of cold worked glass, up cycled from old windows, mirrors and discarded work. These pieces transform into illustrations through engraving and painting processes. 

 

With ecology at the heart of her practice, Charlotte endeavours to use sustainable and responsibly sourced materials wherever possible to reduce her impact on the environment. As materials become scarce commodities through overconsumption, the utilisation of found objects and sustainable materials ensures that she can continue to make work in an ethical manner.
